Push Piers: What They Do, Why We Have Them

What a pier might look like when being installed into the home. What is the purpose of a foundation pier?

A common issue in homes today is the effect of settling on the home's foundation. It can be caused by consistent soil conditions or weak foundation structures. The best and most effective fix for foundation settling is piers.

What does it mean when a home settles?

Typically, when you hear a foreman say that a house has "settled", he's referring to cracks in the bricks, cracked concrete, uneven floors or leaning chimneys. Due to different types of soil, parts of the home may settle worse than others.

At Master Services, we use two types of piers for foundation repairs: push piers and helical piers.

Master Services chooses the best pier based on the natural geology beneath your home.

If bedrock is available, push piers are driven deep into it and attached to your home or structure with adjustable brackets. The brackets are then meticulously balanced until your home is realigned. The realigning will cure cracked surfaces and uneven floors.

Helical piers, on the other hand, are “threaded.” Helical piers look and act like giant screws. We use them when there is not an adequate amount of bedrock available to support the weight of the structure.

Helical piers feature plates that are welded to the pier shaft. These plates secure the pier to the local soil as it is driven beneath your property.

The main purpose of piers is to help realign your home and create a more consistent soil for your home to sit on. Piers are just some of the many foundation repair products Master Services uses every day.
